BBC Panorama turns spotlight on Geo-Engineering Solutions
On Monday 18th November, BBC Panorama aired a documentary examining whether scientists can save the world from anthropogenic climate change. Tying together research from around the globe, the documentary showcases the Universities and non-profit organisations that are working to either remove and store atmospheric carbon dioxide or reflect sunlight to reduce global temperatures (solar radiation management).
Centre Director, Shaun Fitzgerald, gives his view on the extent of the effort needed to reduce temperatures alongside other leading experts in climate science. Professor Myles Allen of Oxford University states "we can stop warming within a generation, if we put our minds to it". This documentary certainly shows that there are scientists currently doing just that.
"Will Science get us there?
I don't know, but I'm optimistic"
- Shaun Fitzgerald
The Centre for Climate Repair, headed by Dr Shaun Fitzgerald, looks at carbon dioxide removal technologies as well as methods shown in this documentary, notably, marine cloud brightening. The Centre works closely with Southern Cross University and Centre Post-Doc, Dante McGrath, spent time on the Great Barrier Reef earlier this year with the scientists shown.
The Centre focuses on collaboration as working to combat climate change needs to be a joint effort.
