Climate Interventions: a distraction or a necessity? Panel discussion

News

So, are climate interventions a distraction or a necessity?

It was fascinating to hear from the panellists at our Cambridge Festival seminar on Friday.

Oliver Morton opened by debating the very question, emphasising the need to consider the subject: “for whom?” As a member of the executive board for The Degrees Initiative, he shared the important work they are doing to help these conversations and the research become more inclusive and global.

Hugh Hunt and Robert Chris expounded on the predictions of temperature increase that lead them to see climate interventions as a necessity. Hunt shared why the SPICE project didn’t make it in 2012 and what is needed to test these interventions. Chris, concerned these won't happen, introduced a new word, “COCAWKI” - Collapse of Civilisation as We Know It. Wow!

Alisha Fredriksson gave perspective as the CEO of a startup already working on capturing ships’ CO2 emissions, and discussed what solutions might look like in the real world.

Tell us: what do you think? Are climate interventions a distraction or a necessity? And indeed, for whom?

Thanks to all those who came and joined the conversation!
