Climate Repair at Arctic Circle Assembly

Written by Emma Noble

We have attended Arctic Circle Assembly for years, but this one had more events on climate interventions than ever.

Events do not signal a go-ahead, or even support, but they do foster the discussions we have been needing to have for a long time: how does research happen, who is involved, and how do we assess properly.

From our Rethickening of Arctic Sea Ice (RASI) presentations and panels on Advisory Parameters and Social Governance, to numerous interconnected sessions on interventions, security, rights, and inclusion, we got to hear from a breadth of voices.

"The importance of involvement of indigenous peoples in research was raised multiple times," said Prof Shaun Fitzgerald. "Free Prior and Informed Consent... I think this is the lowest rung of the ladder. We need to strive for much more than that."

Many thanks to Andrea Ceccolini, Jessica Veldstra, and Fonger Ypma for their contributions to the RASI panel, and to Arctic Circle for hosting - it was invaluable to share results with those who care deeply about the Arctic and its future.

We're gutted to have had to drop out of the Global Risk & Stabilisation Summit hosted by Renaissance Philanthropy this week, but are excited to see how they build even further.
