Shaun Fitzgerald on 'Thinking the Unthinkable'

News

"Was it worth going?" A question many, including Centre Director Shaun Fitzgerald, are asked when it is mentioned that they attended a COP. With COP29 winding down, Shaun looks back at his time in Baku and whether he believes the tide is turning in respect to geo-engineering.

"We shouldn't need to be thinking of future global temperatures well in excess of 2 degrees Celsius...but that is where we are heading at the moment" says Shaun. That means those difficult conversations about geo-engineering that have, so far, been side lined at COP need to be had.

"We are now well beyond the point of being able to rely on emissions reduction alone to keep temperatures below 2 degrees".

Instead, Shaun noted that countries were looking at finding sustainable solutions using energy sources, such as natural gas, which, by no means, solves the problem.

Published on The University of Cambridge's news site, the article sets the tone that emission reductions is no longer enough. Unfortunately scientists may need to step in to bring global temperatures down. The research undertaken at the Centre for Climate Repair at the University of Cambridge aims to address this, with the hope that our research can offer temporary measures whilst we focus on reducing emissions.
