We're going to UArctic Congress

Written by Centre for Climate Repair

We're going to UArctic Congress 2026! With a wonderful panel, we'll be discussing what it means to build AND share knowledge of climate interventions - because we're so much better together.

Join us on Thursday 28th May, 3.10pm, in Arena 2 Plenum with Julius Mihkkal Eriksen Lindi (Sámiráđđi), Fonger Ypma (Arctic Reflections), Anni Pokela (Operaatio Arktis), Shaun Fitzgerald (Centre for Climate Repair), Andrea Ceccolini (Real Ice).

This event will discuss the methods and motivations for building knowledge of climate interventions in and for the Arctic. In particular, it seeks to highlight the role of collaboration with local communities in sharing their knowledge and together building a suite of well-researched potential options to protect the region. The event hopes to springboard conversations across attendees and UArctic members to foster interdisciplinary and international collaboration, without which there will always be knowledge gaps.

Firstly, we will outline some of the physical effects of climate change in the Arctic and the impact this has on local people and animals, as well as the global ramifications. We will then delve into research on potential interventions that could help minimise these effects while we tackle the root causes of global warming. We will consider current knowledge and the gaps that need addressing through research, including ongoing assessments by UArctic.

Secondly, we will discuss ongoing field trials in Arctic regions into ice thickening as a potential intervention, and explore both the physical science and the involvement of local communities in the research. Speakers will recount the knowledge-sharing and -building enabled by working collaboratively.

Finally, we will consider the next steps to building a knowledge-base of interventions and sharing this with the Arctic and the world.

We hope to see you there.
