Ian Kelly

Ian joined the Centre in January 2026 as the Centre's Research Engagement Coordinator. Before that, he had just finished an MSc in Climate Change at Birkbeck, University of London, and was working at the BBC, helping teams connect more deeply with audiences on climate stories and supporting efforts to cut the organisation’s operational carbon emissions.

He spent the previous 20 years as a senior editorial leader in BBC regional and local newsrooms across the UK. Over that time, he covered major events, crime, science, environment, and sport, working at five Olympic Games and several Commonwealth Games. Ian moved to Cambridge nine years ago.

He is passionate about working with local communities, listening to what matters to them, discovering the stories behind those experiences, and helping make sure their voices are heard in the wider conversations shaping our world.
