Royal Society releases report on solar radiation modification

News

A new report by The Royal Society takes a look at Solar Radiation Modification.

As Mark Symes (Director of ARIA's Exploring Climate Cooling programme, who are funding some of our research into this topic) said, the report "rightly highlights the significant knowledge gaps surrounding the potential large-scale deployment of solar radiation modification".

It also highlights exactly why we think SRM is worth researching: not because it could "fix" climate change, but because it could be one of "several tools used to reduce climate-related risks".

When asked about our mission last year, our director Shaun Fitzgerald said: "Don't get me wrong – we need emissions reduction like there's no tomorrow. But we need to equip society with other options as well."

As always, you'll see this across the news over the next few days, drawing out different aspects of the report. Do have a read of the report itself and let us know what you think - a Summary Briefing is available here.
