Summer @ CCR: what our student internships are up to
Seven interns have joined us for the summer to work across departments at the University of Cambridge. From drones to sorbents, Chemistry to Economics, discover what they're working on this season.
Amanda Zhou
Amanda is the recipient of this year's Girton Rokos STEM Academic Internship and is based at the Department of Engineering supervised by Dr Shaun Fitzgerald and Dr Tzia Ming Onn. Her project focuses on developing and testing novel catalysts under photo-and-electro-chemical conditions for efficient methane conversions as well as atmospheric NOx removal.
Amanda is currently studying Natural Sciences at Girton College. Outside of science, she also enjoys playing the piano, art and tennis.
Seren Strong-Wright
Seren is conducting an internship under the supervision of Professor John Taylor, in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. Seren is in his second year reading Mathematics at the University of Exeter.
His research will focus on modelling ocean alkalinity enhancement as a method for marine carbon dioxide removal.
Arnisa Rama
Arnisa is conducting an internship under Professor David Reiner at the Judge Business School researching the Political Economy of Climate Engineering.
Arnisa is in her second year reading Human, Social and Political Sciences at Queens' College, Cambridge. Her interests lie at the intersection between climate justice, international diplomacy and how we can leverage finance to solve our current climate crisis.
Buse Sonmez
Buse will be undertaking an internship at the Department of Chemistry this year, under the supervision of Professor Alex Forse. Her research topic will be looking at Carbon Sorbents for Carbon Dioxide Capture.
Buse is an incoming MSci student in the Department of Chemistry at University College London, where she started her degree in 2022. She is interested in learning languages and is currently learning Spanish and German. She also loves going to musicals and the theatre in her spare time.
Rohan Agarwal
Rohan is undertaking an internship in the Department of Chemistry under the supervision of Dr Alex Archibald. Rohan's project will address distinct approaches to atmospheric methane removal to quantify their uncertainties and therefore help direct work relevant to atmospheric methane removal in the future.
Rohan is studying Natural Sciences (Physical) at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge where he matriculated in 2023. In his free time he enjoys reading, climbing, training for gymnastics and going for countryside walks.
Luca (Hongyan) Lin
Luca matriculated into Part IB of the Engineering Tripos in 2023 and is now entering Part IIB, specialising in mechanical and aerospace engineering.
His project, supervised by Professor Hugh Hunt, investigates the use of drones for aerosol particle sizing and albedo measurements in the context of marine cloud brightening.
Grace Tuma
Grace is conducting an internship in the Department of Earth Sciences, under the supervision of Professor Sascha Turchyn on field greenhouse emissions.
Grace is a Natural Sciences student at Pembroke College going into their third year. She is interested in chemistry and environmental science and how knowledge in different scientific fields can be applied to climate change.
Outside of academics, Grace enjoys spending times outdoors through sports as well as hiking and camping.
