Emissions reduction is central to climate mitigation and must include innovations in every sector of society to achieve net-zero emissions. As the world warms, environmental changes - such as increased emissions from wetlands and melting permafrost - alter the earth's ability to manage to greenhouse gas concentrations. There is an urgent need for society to get off fossil fuels and limit deforestation.

In addition to reducing emissions, there is a need to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide and methane. Our research covers a spectrum of approaches from ecosystem restoration to engineered solutions.

Our researchers are part of international teams investigating methods to cool the Earth. Through modelling and controlled, small-scale outdoor experiments, they are assessing a range of climate interventions to build a knowledge-base for informed decision-making.
