A new report by Prof James Hansen sheds light on the uncertainties of global climate predictions - and why that means we need to respond now.
Hansen - a scientist known for sounding the alarm on climate breakdown to a UN congressional committee in 1988 - writes alongside seventeen other authors, including members of youth initiatives such as Operaatio Arktis and Green Africa Youth Organization.
They suggest that the best estimates of the UN IPCC understate climate sensitivity and that we do not yet understand the potential scenarios. In light of these uncertainties, Hansen et al advise that young people should not be prevented from having "knowledge of the potential and limitations of purposeful global cooling” – that is, climate intervention methods – “in their toolbox".
Dr Shaun Fitzgerald, director of the Centre for Climate Repair, shares his key takeaways from the report.
